who are you?

My name is Eternity Martis (MAR-tiss) and I'm a Toronto-based journalist and editor. I'm also a podcaster and freelance journalist and my writing has been featured in places including VICE, xoJane, Salon, BroadlyThe Huffington Post, CanadalandTVO.org, CBC, Hazlitt, The WalrusComplex, The Fader and more.

I have a Masters in journalism from Ryerson University and a double honours major degree in both English Language and Literature and Women's Studies from Western University. I also have a Certificate in Writing with Distinction from Western University.

Topics: Race/racism, social justice, feminism, women's issues, relationships/sex/dating, pop culture, music, reproductive and mental health.

Genres: Reportage, features, longform, personal essays, memoir, in-depth articles.

why does your blog only cover how to write about certain topics?

Early on in my career, many people told me that I'd never get far in journalism if I had a niche; but that's exactly what got me where I am today. I've spent the past several years writing about particular issues across certain genres — and I've become an expert in my interests. While I can write and report on everything, I've chosen to provide a niche service to help writers interested in these subjects hone their craft and become experts in the fields they love.

At the same time that writers and journalists are expected to know and do everything, having a niche is increasingly popular. There are endless news writers, but it takes skill, craft and patience to find and write about the stories buried under the surface.

can you help me edit my own work?

Absolutely! I have a sharp eye for detail and all the right questions to ask to get you writing the best damn piece of work you've ever produced. Editing can be done in person, by phone or by video chat. I have four years of experiencing editing various kinds of work — from news articles on various topics (current affairs, politics, business, environment) to academic and business documents. Learn more about my editing services here.

what if i only have a story idea?

Not a problem. I can help you turn your idea into a tangible product, whether that's an article, a podcast, a book proposal or even a book — I can make it happen. I also offer pitch, freelance and advocacy journalism coaching to keep you on track throughout your journey towards building your empire. Consulting and coaching can be done in person, by phone, by video chat or a combination. Learn more about my coaching and consulting services here.

why should i work with you?

When it comes to writing, I don't play. For me, there's nothing more pressing than than telling a good story, in all its raw, uncomfortable, fearless, powerful and truthful glory — and I want to work with people who share the same burning urgency. If you want someone to push you past your comfort zone; if you want someone who is unapologetic about their work and knows how to navigate journalism industry as a woman of colour; if you're willing to question what you know and become the story; if you're ready to be a fearless and courageous writer; and if you want to change lives, policies and social structures, I'm the person you've been waiting for.
